CTOnews.com, Nov. 23, Intel announced in September that it will launch the Core Ultra 1 mobile processor codenamed Meteor Lake on December 14.

In order to stimulate consumer interest in the new mobile processor, Tom Petersen, a senior engineer in the graphics department, details the performance of the kernel in the latest video released by Intel.

He said that compared with the 12th-generation Alder Lake chip (CTOnews.com note: compared with the previous generation Raptor Lake), the graphics performance per watt of Meteor Lake core is twice as good.

Petersen said that Intel Meteor Lake's core display has such a big breakthrough, mainly because of improved clock speed, optimized architecture, and the use of larger iGPU units.

A GPU usually consists of three parts:

Graphics engine: working with 3D ima

Display module: responsible for outputting the signal to the screen

Media engine: responsible for encoding and decoding video

Petersen explains at the beginning of the video that Meteor Lake uses the decomposition architecture to creatively optimize the kernel architecture.

Meteor Lake's iGPU media engine is actually located in the SoC chiplet rather than in the main integrated graphics unit, which can significantly reduce power consumption and extend battery life performance. IGPU chiplet adopts Xe-LPG graphics architecture, which directly deals with 3D graphics, computing functions and some AI algorithm operations.

The graphics architecture of Xe-LPG is basically the same as that of Xe-HPG (the architecture used for the 13th generation of CPU kernels), but without the XMX hardware matrix engine, Xe-LPG retains support for general DP4a shader instructions to support XeSS sampling technology.

Petersen also explained that Meteor Lake integrated graphics cards have achieved performance improvements by increasing the working frequency of the graphics core, not only due to the overall optimization of the integrated graphics card structure, but also due to the transition to new technology programs. The integrated graphics chip of Meteor Lake processor is manufactured by TSMC N5 technology. Compared with the Xe-LP graphics card of the Alder Lake processor, it is optimized for both lower operating voltage and higher clock speed.
