Edge computing can provide IT services and computing power locally, reduce the amount of uploaded data, save the time delay of network operation and service delivery, improve transmission efficiency, and enable massive data to be stored, processed, analyzed, decided and executed locally. Enterprises can choose to sink the computing power closer to the edge of the device, resulting in a new collaborative model of end-edge-cloud.
With the rapid development of cloud computing, the demand for edge computing is surging. According to the key data of STL Partners edge computing, the overall size of the global edge computing market will reach US $445 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 48 per cent.
In the White Paper on collaboration between Edge Computing and Cloud Computing jointly issued by the Edge Computing Industry Alliance (ECC) and the Industrial Internet Industry Alliance (AII), it is clearly pointed out that the relationship between edge computing and cloud computing is not a substitute relationship, but a complementary collaborative relationship. Edge computing and cloud computing need to work closely together to better meet the matching of various demand scenarios, so as to enlarge the application value of edge computing and cloud computing. Edge computing is not only close to the execution unit, but also the collection and preliminary processing unit of high-value data needed in the cloud, which can better support cloud applications; on the contrary, the business rules or models optimized by big data analysis in cloud computing can be sent to the edge side, and edge computing is run based on new business rules or models.

Nowadays, with the development of digital economy and the promotion and drive of AIGC represented by ChatGPT, the accelerating role of computing power as a new type of productive forces in the era of digital economy is further highlighted. In October 2023, the Action Plan for High-quality Development of Computing Infrastructure jointly issued by six departments, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, pointed out that while promoting the coordinated development of intelligent computing power and general computing power in different computing architectures to meet various business needs, it is also necessary to speed up the construction of edge computing power and promote the ubiquitous distribution of computing power on the cloud edge.
After years of development, the overall industry and ecology of cloud computing and edge computing are becoming more and more mature, which has become an important support to enhance the level of information development and create new momentum of the digital economy. The coordinated development of cloud computing and edge computing can maximize the application value of cloud-edge computing. More and more cloud computing manufacturers began to extend and expand to the edge, cloud-side collaborative solutions, application cases gradually mature and quickly landed, providing a safe and reliable support for the digital transformation of enterprises.
Internationally, cloud computing giants Amazon, Microsoft and Google have all launched related edge computing products. Amazon launched AWS Greengrass functional software to extend AWS to devices to process data generated by terminals locally, while still using transport for management, data analysis and persistent storage. Microsoft released Azure IoT Edge edge products, which extend cloud analytics to edge devices, support offline use, and focus on edge artificial intelligence applications. Google also launched the hardware chip Edge TPU and software stack Cloud IoT Edge in 2018, which extends data processing and machine learning to edge devices, allowing devices to manipulate data from their sensors in real time and predict results locally.
In China, Huawei, Tencent, Xinhua and others have also launched corresponding edge computing products. Huawei launched the IEF platform in 2018, which provides the ability to extend cloud applications to the edge through nano-managed users' edge nodes, linkage edge and cloud data, and provide enterprises with complete edge and cloud collaborative edge computing solutions. Tencent launched CDN Edge for edge computing, sinking data center services to CDN edge nodes with the lowest latency to the corresponding end users, while reducing the computing pressure and network load on users' data centers. Launch smart edge BIE to extend cloud computing capabilities to users' site, provide temporary offline and low latency computing services, and cooperate with intelligent edge cloud management suite to form an integrated cloud solution of "cloud management while computing". Xinhua San launched the super-converged edge computing product UIS-Edge, which supports a variety of hardware forms and deployment methods, extends cloud native capabilities to the edge, provides perfect device access, edge computing and cloud-edge collaboration capabilities, and provides one-stop cloud-edge convergence solutions for enterprises.
In addition, from the government, industrial institutions to relevant alliances, they are also accelerating the promotion of research and standard-setting for cloud-side collaborative scenarios. In May 2019, the Green Computing Industry Alliance (GCC) and the Edge Computing Industry Alliance (ECC) signed a cooperation agreement to jointly promote the specification, test verification and implementation promotion of heterogeneous computing in the field of edge computing. GCC and ECC also jointly formed the Edge Computing Infrastructure Industry Promotion working Group (ECII) to develop IT infrastructure specifications and edge computing gateway specifications that host edge clouds. At present, ECII has issued the hardware technical specification of edge data center based on green computing, set up an ECII verification laboratory for technical verification, the "White Paper on Edge Computing IT Infrastructure" is constantly updated, and the action to create edge data center solutions and demonstration projects has also been fruitful.
ARM ecology is full of vitality driven by computing power.
In the era of "computing power is king", the core task is to promote the coordinated development of computing power layout and network architecture, and to realize the "through train" of computing power production, supply, scheduling, application and service. As one of the prerequisites, it is very important to speed up the construction of a computing infrastructure system of cloud-side coordination and the integration of computing, deposit and transportation.
China attaches great importance to the development of intelligent computing industry, focusing on the intelligent computing center, artificial intelligence, large models and other policy documents have been issued to speed up the industrial layout. Under this background, the chip ecology based on ARM architecture has attracted much attention.
As we all know, ARM processors are born with the advantage of high computing efficiency, so they are like a fish in water in terminal application scenarios, and have been widely embedded in edge controllers and edge gateways. In the past, a big bottleneck in the ecological development of ARM is that it is difficult to transplant its advantages in mobile applications to the server side. The native multi-core architecture of ARM processors can provide users with better performance and power consumption ratio, and plays a more important supporting role in the cloud-side integrated distributed cloud architecture. Huawei Kunpeng CPU and Feiteng CPU both belong to ARM architecture, and there are many successful application cases in Yunbian collaborative application scenarios. For example, Huawei has long been committed to achieving a breakthrough in the scene of ARM applications, and now provides users with more cost-effective computing power in the areas of big data, distributed storage, ARM native, high-performance computing and database applications. In order to further improve the diversity computing technology system and promote the construction of an open and innovative ecology in the field of information technology, the Green Computing Industry Alliance (GCC) and the Edge Computing Industry Alliance (ECC), starting with standardization, continue to carry out core technology research, strengthen the integration of industry, university, research and application, and promote the large-scale application of related computing products. Cloud-side collaboration, a new era of win-win computing
Computing power is the driving force to promote industrial transformation and upgrading, empower scientific and technological innovation, and achieve efficient social governance. The collaborative deployment of computing power by cloud is one of the key tasks to improve the computing power supply system, and it is of great significance for the application of computing power enabling industry and digital transformation.
Cloud-edge collaboration will lead cloud computing and edge computing to further integration. From the perspective of technology and architecture, traditional cloud computing and edge cloud are gradually integrated to form a hierarchical computing architecture. In terms of the needs of users, they further improve the efficiency of resource sharing and utilization by merging the resources of the central cloud with the edge nodes to create a more integrated business architecture.
