Max Lawson, co-author of the report, told Agence France-Presse that it is everyone's responsibility to deal with the global climate crisis, but everyone's responsibility should not be equal.

One of the main findings of the study is that the world's richest 1 per cent (77 million people) account for 16 per cent of global consumer emissions.

This is the same proportion of carbon emissions as the lowest 66 per cent of the world's population, or 5.11 billion people.

The 1 per cent is adjusted for purchasing power parity. In the US, for example, the threshold is $140000, while in Kenya it is about $40000.

Bernard Arnault, the billionaire founder of Louis Vuitton and France's richest man, has a footprint 1270 times that of the average French.
