CTOnews.com, November 22 (Xinhua)-- the US Federal Communications Commission (Federal Communications Commission,FCC) last week issued new regulations for US telecom operators, requiring operators to conduct security verification on users applying for "SIM card transfer" to prevent consumers' mobile phone numbers from being inexplicably used for hijacking attacks by underground industries.

CTOnews.com note: SIM card hijacking attack (SIM Swap) means that the underground industry uses various means to make telecom operators think that the victim's SIM card is lost, and the underground industry can take this opportunity to obtain the victim's new SIM card / eSIM authority, thus embezzling cash by virtue of mobile phone number authentication. In the consumer complaint statistics of the US FBI Cyber Crime Complaints Center last year, it received a total of more than 2000 complaints about SIM card hijacking. The new regulation issued by FCC in the United States is to prevent underground industries from hijacking attacks on SIM cards. FCC requires telecom operators to use multiple methods to authenticate customers when transferring customers' mobile phone numbers to new devices or issuing new SIM cards, so as to avoid SIM card hijacking attacks on customers.

In addition, CTOnews.com noted that researchers at Princeton University in the United States experimented with SIM card hijacking attacks in 2020. They bought 10 SIM prepaid cards from each of five different telecom operators, and then called customer service to announce that there was a problem with the SIM card and asked for a new SIM card. As a result, the researchers successfully asked customer service to reissue 39 of the 50 SIM cards.
