CTOnews.com, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) according to a recent research paper published in the journal Nature Metabolism, users who take too much vitamin B5 (usually associated with cell metabolism) may cause certain types of cancer cell tumors.

Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, comes from the Greek word "ubiquitous acids" and is widely distributed in nature.

Pantothenic acid participates in a variety of metabolism in the body, promoting the decomposition of acetic acid in sugars, fats and amino acids, and is also a component of multi-enzyme complex fatty acid synthase.

The study found that the growth and survival of breast tumor cells with oncogene MYC are heavily dependent on vitamin B5, while dietary vitamin B5 restriction reverses MYC-mediated metabolic changes and hinders tumor growth.

Dr Maria Yuneva said in a press release: "Vitamin B5 is necessary for normal body function. The body is in a state of natural balance. Taking too much vitamin B5 may have toxic side effects."

The team cultured tumors with two different MYC-expressing types and transplanted human breast cancer tissue (a mixture of high-expression Myc and low-expression Myc) into mice.

The team further found that Myc increased the amount of multivitamin transporter SLC5A6, which allowed more vitamin B5 to enter the cell. When the team caused the cells to produce more SLC5A6, more vitamin B5 entered the cells, even in cells with low expression of Myc, enough to make them grow faster.

Image source: the clinikally team fed mice on a vitamin B5-deficient diet. The results showed that mixed tumors with low expression of Myc and high expression of Myc grew more slowly than those fed with a standard diet. The same thing was observed when human breast cancer tissue was transplanted into mice.

Correlation analysis showed that vitamin B5 had the strongest correlation with the level of MYC in breast tumors, and its chemical structure was confirmed by chemical standard and tumor tissue tandem mass spectrometry system.
