Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thank you, CTOnews.com netizens, for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, November 21 (Xinhua)-- the British Library, the National Library of England and one of the largest libraries in the world, has confirmed a ransomware attack that resulted in internal data theft.
In late October, the British Library disclosed for the first time that it was experiencing an unspecified cyber security incident, causing "significant technical disruptions" on its websites in London and Yorkshire, which in turn paralyzed its website, phone lines and on-site services such as visitor Wi-Fi.
Two weeks later, the network outage of the British Library continues. The group has now confirmed that the interruption was caused by a blackmail software attack launched by "organizations known for such criminal activities". The British Library said some internal data had been leaked online and "seems to come from our internal human resources files".
The British Library has been added to the list of websites leaked by the Rhysida blackmail software gang, which claimed responsibility for the attack and threatened to release data stolen from the British Library unless the British Library pays a ransom-bitcoins worth more than $740000 (CTOnews.com Note: about 5.306 million yuan), TechCrunch reported.
The Rhysida blackmail software group has not disclosed how much data or what type of data it stole from the British library, but the data samples shared by the group appear to include employment documents and passport scans.
In a statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday local time, the British Library said there was "no evidence" that its customers' data had been compromised, but advised users to change their passwords as a "precaution", especially if customers' multiple services use the same password.
The British Library has not disclosed how it was hacked, how much employee data was stolen, or whether it received communications or ransom demands from hackers.
The British Library said in its latest statement that it could take weeks or more to recover from the ransomware attack. "We expect to resume many services in the coming weeks, but some disruptions are likely to last longer," the statement said. "
