Nov. 21-three Amazon employees sued their employer on Monday, local time, alleging gender discrimination and accusing the company of retaliating after they complained about "long-standing pay inequality."

Caroline Wilmuth, Katherine Schomer and Erin Combs, who hold different positions in Amazon's corporate research and strategy division, say women are assigned lower titles, while men have higher positions and higher salaries.

In addition, companies "often do not" promote women to positions, "resulting in lower pay for women, even if they do similar jobs to men in higher positions".

Starting at the end of 2021, the three women raised these concerns with their managers and Amazon's human resources department, which launched an investigation into whether the employees were misclassified because of their gender. Wilmus said that of her team's four researchers, three female employees were classified as lower-paid jobs, while the only male researchers were classified as higher-paid, higher-level positions. The male researcher's salary is "about 150% of Schumer's salary," according to the complaint.

Mr Wilmus, Mr Schumer and Mr Combs claimed that within "a few weeks" when they dared to speak out, Amazon retaliated against them by demoting them and "significantly" reduced their job powers. and transferred their direct subordinates to another team managed by male executives. They had accused the male executive of sexism.

"I was shocked and devastated when I found that my salary was much lower than that of my male colleagues on my team," Wilmus said in a statement. Amazon made things worse after I filed a complaint, disbanding the team I built from scratch and reducing me to a position with much fewer career opportunities. "

In March, an investigator assigned to investigate Ms Wilmus's concerns concluded that Amazon's decision to transfer her report to another team overseen by male executives had a "different impact" on women, according to the complaint. In the course of the investigation, the investigators spoke to male researchers on Wilmus's team, who admitted that the restructuring was "discriminatory and transgender" and harmed Wilmus, Schumer and Combs.

Brad Glasser, an Amazon spokesman, refuted the lawsuit in a statement, saying: "We believe these claims are false and will prove it through legal proceedings."

He added that Amazon did not tolerate discrimination in the workplace and investigated all reports of such behaviour.

The class action lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court on the West side of Washington. The lawsuit was filed by Outten& Golden, a New York law firm that won a gender discrimination lawsuit on behalf of a Google executive and sued the company for gender and racial discrimination on behalf of Uber's software engineer.

In recent years, Amazon has faced many allegations of gender and racial discrimination from employees. After being accused of racial bias, the company reviewed its employee review system in 2021 and conducted a separate investigation into discrimination and bias in its cloud computing division. Last April, Amazon announced that it would conduct a racial equality audit of its front-line workforce, led by former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
