China's first high-temperature superconducting low-voltage DC cable was officially put into operation in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province yesterday, filling the gap in the application of superconducting cable low-voltage DC system in China, CCTV reported. CCTV pointed out that the application of DC superconducting transmission technology has injected strong impetus into the construction of China's new power system and the transformation and upgrading of energy.
According to the introduction of Jiangsu Power supply Company of State Grid, there have been some explorations in the application of superconducting cables in China, but they are all demonstration projects of AC superconducting cables. Compared with AC superconducting cable, high temperature superconducting low voltage DC cable can reduce power grid line loss by about 70%.
CTOnews.com checked the literature data and found that the loss of AC HTS cable is 3% Murray 4%, while that of DC superconducting cable is only 1% Murray 2%.
In June 2020, Suzhou Wujiang District Government, State Grid Suzhou Power supply Company and Jiangsu Yongding Co., Ltd. jointly carried out a demonstration project of high temperature superconducting DC cable. It is planned to build a 180-meter-long cable in the medium and low voltage DC distribution network in Tongli, Wujiang, connecting the 10 kV Pangdong DC central station with the DC distribution room in the plant of Hongsheng plastic Technology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd.
It is reported that the second generation of yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) high temperature superconducting tape used in this project is a domestic material, which realizes the localization of the core material of the superconducting cable system, and the cable adopts the coaxial mode of positive and negative poles for the first time in China, which is the most compact superconducting cable at present.
According to Yang Chen, deputy director of the equipment department of the State Grid Suzhou Power supply Company, the designed working voltage of the cable is ±375V, the maximum current is 4500A, and the cross-sectional area of the conductor is 90mm2.
In contrast, the cross-sectional area of conventional PVC copper core cable at the same voltage level is about twice that of conventional cable, but its power transmission capacity is 20 times that of conventional cable, and the conductor loss is only 1/10 of that of conventional cable.
