"your dismissal of Sam Altman and the removal of Greg Brockman's board seats have jeopardized all our work and undermined our mission and the company," the letter wrote. "your actions have made it clear that you are unable to supervise OpenAI."

OpenAI's board of directors dismissed Altman on Friday, claiming that "he was dishonest in his communication with the board and prevented the board from performing its duties." Mira Murati, chief technology officer of OpenAI, was appointed interim CEO.

OpenAI's board seemed willing to let Altman lead the company again after opposition from investors such as Microsoft, and Altman released a picture of him wearing a visitor badge at the company's headquarters on Sunday. But last night, the board told employees that Altman would not return to the company.
