Gurman: Apple plans to equip the MacBook with a self-developed baseband, which will be launched as early as 2028

CTOnews.com, Nov. 20 (Xinhua)-- Apple plans to launch a MacBook with a self-developed modem as early as 2028, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

It is reported that Apple has been developing its own modem since 2018 to get rid of its dependence on Qualcomm. The launch of the modem has been delayed several times and is now expected to be ready around 2026, and Gurman now hears that Apple plans to use the chip in other Apple devices in the next few years.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman wrote that Apple's ambitions include integrating its own modems into a system-on-chip (SoC), which will eventually give the MacBook built-in cellular connectivity. It may take another two to three years for Apple to put the chip into the cellular versions of the Apple Watch, iPad and Mac, when the component will be integrated into the company's system-on-chip, Goolman said.

CTOnews.com noted that Apple had explored the possibility of developing a MacBook with cellular connectivity in the past, and the company had considered introducing a MacBook Air with 3G connectivity, but former CEO Steve Jobs said in 2008 that Apple decided not to do so because it would take up too much space.

Mr. Gurman also summarized other homemade chip projects that Apple is working on, which have been reported before, including a chip that combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that will eventually replace Broadcom components, a Micro-LED display for Apple devices, and a non-invasive blood sugar monitoring system.
