CTOnews.com, Nov. 20, GitHub released the Octoverse Open Source status report 2023, which mainly emphasizes the role of AI in the development process and focuses on cloud and Git open source activities.

According to officials, the three major trends this year are as follows:

Developers are using generative AI to build heavily: more and more developers are trying to use the basic models of OpenAI and other AI companies, and open source generative AI projects even entered the top 10 most popular open source projects by number of contributors in 2023. Almost all developers (92%) are using or trying AI tools.

Developers are running cloud native applications on a large scale: Git-based infrastructure as a declarative language for code (IaC) workflows has increased, cloud deployments have become more standardized, and developers' use of Dockerfile and containers, IaC, and other cloud native technologies has accelerated dramatically.

For the first time in 2023 (first-time), open source has the largest number of contributors: open source projects with commercial support are still the most popular among contributors. But the generative AI project has become one of the top ten most popular first-time contributors this year. Private projects on GitHub increased significantly, up 38 per cent from a year earlier, accounting for more than 80 per cent of all activities on GitHub.

Geographically, the United States has 20.2 million developers, a growth of 21 percent, and is still the largest developer community in the world. The size of the developer community in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America is expanding year by year, with India, Brazil and Japan taking the lead.

On the AI side, developers are increasingly experimenting with the AI model, analyzing the top 20 open source generated artificial intelligence projects on GitHub, some of which are personally owned. This shows that open source projects on GitHub continue to drive innovation.

Generative AI is driving the global growth of individual contributors to related projects by 148% year-on-year, and the total number of generated artificial intelligence projects by 248% year-on-year. A few years ago, developers often used machine learning libraries such as tensorflow / tensorflow and pytorch / pytorch to build projects; now they are more trying to use AI models and LLM (such as ChatGPT API).

In terms of programming languages, CTOnews.com notes that JavaScript is once again at the top of the list, and Python and Java remain in the top five year after year.

This year, TypeScript surpassed Java for the first time, overtaking Java as the third most popular language in the OSS project on GitHub for the first time, and its user base grew by 37%.

There has been a marked increase in the number of popular languages and frameworks for data analysis and manipulation. Ancient languages such as T-SQL and TeX grew in 2023, highlighting the increasing use of open source platforms and tools by data scientists, mathematicians and analysts, making programming languages no longer limited to traditional software development.
