Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) Google introduced seamless updates when it launched its first Pixel phone in 2016. This feature allows Pixel phones to install updates when they are powered on, avoiding long downtime when installing system updates.
In theory, this feature is useful, but there is a big problem with seamless updates: it takes a long time to install updates in the background, and it takes about 30 minutes to an hour to install a simple security patch. So, although there is no long downtime due to the short reboot duration, the actual update installation takes a long time, and it looks like Android finally solved this problem in Google 14.
On reddit, several Pixel mobile phone users reported that the installation speed of Android 14 QPR2 beta was significantly faster on their phones, some mentioned that the optimization process only took a few minutes, and many AndroidPolice sources confirmed the increase in installation speed. Manuel Vonau, Android Police's senior Google editor, updated his Pixel 7 from an old Android 14 version to Android 14 QPR beta version 1 in less than 20 minutes. Some Pixel 6 users also say they have noticed a similar increase in the installation speed of updates, suggesting that these improvements are not limited to one phone.
Seamless updates use two virtual system partitions, allowing Pixel phones to install updates to inactive partitions when powered on. This installation process takes a long time, sometimes more than an hour, in the background and when the phone is idle. After that, you need to restart again, when the Pixel phone will switch to the updated system partition.
CTOnews.com notes that seamless updates have been around for more than seven years, probably because it took too long to install so that other Android phones did not adopt this feature. There are rumors that Android will force seamless updates in Google 13, but none of the other flagship phones released this year have this feature.
Perhaps as Google makes the necessary speed improvements to seamless updates in Android 14, other Android vendors will adopt this feature on their flagship phones in 2024.
