Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Nov. 19 (Xinhua)-- the head of the company's augmented reality software is leaving, raising questions about the company's progress in developing a custom operating system for its planned AR glasses, a Meta spokesman told Reuters on Friday.

Don Box, vice president of engineering at Meta, announced the end of his tenure within the company this week, but did not say what he planned to do next, according to a person familiar with the matter.

A spokesman for Meta confirmed that Box would leave the company this weekend and said he did so for personal reasons and that his decision would not have any impact on the product roadmap.

According to sources, Box is a senior engineer whose departure could hinder the progress of the operating system, which is a key component of Meta's AR glasses project.

According to sources, Meta has been planning to launch the first generation of AR glasses by next year, but at that time they are for internal use only and will be used by a selected group of developers. Meta aims to launch the first AR glasses to consumers in 2027.

CTOnews.com notes that Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's chief executive, has described AR glasses as a masterpiece and is working to build hardware that provides an immersive virtual "meta-universe" experience and replaces laptops and mobile devices.

Andrew Bosworth, chief technology officer and head of the company's meta-universe-focused Reality Labs division, recently said that Meta still faces "considerable challenges" in building an AR product that can be brought to market, and it will take several years.

The company has also had trouble creating customized wafers for its AR / VR products and last month laid off some employees at FAST, its Reality Labs customized wafer division.

Meta originally hired Box in 2021 to find a way forward after the failure of its XROS project, which aims to create a unified customized operating system for its virtual reality head display, Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses and planned augmented reality glasses.

At the beginning of last year, Box broke down the 300-person XROS department into teams dedicated to each device line and personally took over the team focused on AR software. Before joining Meta, Box had been working at Microsoft since 2002. His last position at Microsoft was in charge of mixed reality engineering, which involved developing software for HoloLens2 headers and related AR / VR services. Box was known for leading the creation of the Xbox One operating system and later in charge of Microsoft's core operating system group, which is responsible for all Windows products.
