CTOnews.com, Nov. 19 (Xinhua)-- Apple's head of security engineering and architecture, Ivan Kostici, explained in an interview with the Independent why Apple insists on making major investments in security.

He also talked about the possibility that Apple might open iPhone app side loading to third-party app stores because of upcoming EU regulations.

Most iPhone users believe that even if the side load is open, they will still choose to continue to use App Store, and the side load will only appear as an additional option. However, Kirstich believes this is a "huge misunderstanding".

This is a huge misunderstanding-we have tried to explain it many times. The reality achieved by alternative distribution requirements is that the software that European users need to use-sometimes commercial software, sometimes personal software, social software, what they want to use-may only be distributed in an alternative way outside the store.

In these cases, users may eventually be forced to use third-party systems instead of using App Store, which Apple believes is not as secure as App Store.

In this case, those users do not get the right to choose the software from the distribution mechanism they trust. So, in fact, users don't retain the option to get all the software from App Store as they do today.

CTOnews.com noted that Apple executive Craig Federidge is also strongly opposed to side loading. In a speech two years ago, Federici called the profile "the best friend of cyber criminals." However, in this year's WWDC interview, Federici acknowledged that Apple may have no choice but to comply with EU rules on side loading and third-party app stores.

Kostici also provided some insights into Apple's security practices and the entire industry of data disclosure, security and encryption. Kirstich, for example, talks about Apple's frequent conflicts with the government over protecting user data.
