Global shutter, also known as global shutter, English Global Shutter. It is a kind of electronic shutter, as opposed to the shutter shutter (Rolling Shutter).

Global shutter is not a new technology. A typical CCD is a global shutter, and Sony's PMW-F55 launched in 2012 also uses a global shutter sensor. However, after the transition of the sensor from CCD to CMOS and the mainstream camera from SLR to micro-SLR, the problems of shutter shutter and jelly effect are becoming more and more prominent.

Prior to this, global shutter CMOS sensors were mainly used in industry (monitoring, manufacturing, machine vision, etc.) and cinematography, and were very expensive-Komodo-X, launched by Red in the first half of this year, uses a Super35 (27.03mm × 14.26mm) global shutter sensor of about 1990 megapixels, priced from about US $10,000. Sony's new Alpha 9III not only brings the price of a product equipped with a full-frame global shutter sensor to less than $10, 000 (actually only $6000), but also meets the needs of photo shooting (mainly for news and sports photography, to be exact).

Compared to the full-frame global shutter sensor, the price of the ▲ is too cheap to note that there are several paths to the global shutter. The traditional method is to equip each pixel with an independent ADC (analog-to-digital conversion circuit). The advantage is that it does not affect the trap capacity, so it does not limit the reference sensitivity and picture quality, but the disadvantage is that the cost and power consumption are very exaggerated. Sony's approach is to equip each pixel with a memory unit (according to the Pregius / Pregius S official) so that all pixels are stored at the same time and then converted line by line into digital signals sent to the processor-this does not significantly increase the number of ADC, thus controlling power consumption and cost.

The products with global electronic shutter can not only completely eliminate the jelly effect, but also meet the dynamic and static shooting needs of moving objects and high-speed special scenes. It can also synchronize the flash under the high-speed shutter, reducing the need for flash power for outdoor and high-speed shooting-with a "global electronic shutter", there is really no need for a mechanical shutter at all.

Sony now has 2.2, 2.7, 3.4, 4.5 and 5.8 series of dozens of products that support global shutters. Launched in March 2021, IMX661, with 56.73mm diagonal length and 1.2768 megapixels, is one of the few super-large global shutter sensors. Canon also has many sensors that support global shutter. Since January this year, the LI5030 series has been on sale with a full frame of about 19 million effective pixels and supports full-pixel 12bit 58fps output speed.
