Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com Bank of Korea recently released a study on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the labor market, predicting that AI could lead to the disappearance of up to 4 million jobs in the country in the next 20 years, accounting for 14% of total jobs. This is another warning about AI threats after Goldman Sachs, McKinsey and other institutions.
According to a team of analysts at the Bank of Korea on Thursday, workers with higher education and income will face greater risks because AI can perform analytical and cognitive tasks more effectively. They point out that occupations such as chemists, doctors, lawyers, accountants and asset managers are the easiest to replace with AI, while jobs in fields such as catering, education and music are relatively safe.
The BOK study also noted that AI development will boost demand for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, as well as soft skills such as communication and teamwork. At the same time, AI will also help South Korea solve the problem of aging population. Currently, South Korea is already one of the countries with the highest robot usage rate in the world, but it still lags behind other countries in AI utilization rate.
CTOnews.com notes that the Bank of Korea's research echoes reports from other agencies that AI is a double-edged sword that can both boost productivity and destroy jobs. Goldman Sachs, for example, estimated in a report earlier this year that while generative AI, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, could boost global economic output by 7 percent within a decade, it could also put 300 million jobs at risk globally, with lawyers and executives the most vulnerable. McKinsey has also predicted that AI will disrupt employment for knowledge workers, but it has the potential to boost global productivity.
Silicon Valley billionaire and tech venture capitalist Vinod Khosla has a more pessimistic view of the future of AI. He recently warned that within 10 years AI will be able to "do 80 percent of the jobs we know today," including "accounting and medical majors" and some "high-paying" occupations. He advised young people to "get the widest possible education because you don't know what will be relevant later."
