Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com BMW's Munich plant has ended production of internal combustion engines, marking the end of an era when the company intends to transform the plant into a facility for producing a range of electric vehicles.

CTOnews.com notes that this outcome was foreboded. BMW announced in November 2020 that it would shift production of its eight-and twelve-cylinder engines from Munich to Hammshole in the UK, while smaller engines would be produced in Steyer, Austria.

According to German media BR24, the last internal combustion engine produced at the Munich plant was a V8 engine, which went off the assembly line on November 10. The plant's 1200 employees will be retrained and placed in other positions or at BMW's other plants.

Interestingly, unlike most of its competitors, BMW has not set a specific date for ceasing production of internal combustion engine vehicles. While many competitors promise to switch entirely to electric vehicles by 2030, BMW is skeptical, arguing that this is unachievable. As a result, the company will continue to sell both internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles in many markets.

The Munich plant, which has been producing electric cars i4 since October 2021, will also be the production base for future electric cars based on the Neue Klasse platform. BMW Blog understands that other electric vehicles Munich will produce include the electric 3 Series (i3), i3 Travel Edition and the second generation i4. The automaker has confirmed that it will launch six electric vehicles based on the Neue Klasse platform between 2025 and 2027.

BMW showed off its first concept car based on the Neue Klasse platform in early September, which was also designed to support combustion engine power, so even this model does not mean the end of BMW's combustion engine. BMW is also producing other electric vehicles elsewhere in Germany, but not in Munich, including the iX, i5 and i7 in Dingolfing, and the iX1 and iX2 in Regensburg. BMW also plans to build a large battery assembly site in Strasky.
