CTOnews.com, November 15 (Xinhua) NASA's new SPHEREx mission aims to map the universe with "unprecedented details and colors".

The SPHEREx space telescope is now under construction and is scheduled to be launched next year. This is a new type of space-based observation platform, which will map more than 450 million galaxies and 100 million stars in the Milky way, covering 96 bands in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The project is a two-year astrophysical mission that plans to put the space telescope SPHEREx into orbit and is expected to cost NASA about $98.8 million (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 718 million yuan).

▲ source: NASASPHEREx is an acronym for Specto-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer. The project aims to create a different map of the universe, image the entire sky and gather information about millions of galaxies.

Using this map, scientists will study what happened in the first moment after the Big Bang, the history of galaxy evolution and the origin of water in planetary systems in our Milky way Milky way.

According to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) program, during its planned two-year life, SPHEREx will map the entire sky, producing two maps a year.

▲ assembled SPHEREx Photon Shield in recent months, JPL scientists have been assembling the telescope, assembling its components into a final form. For example, the SPHEREx photon shield was assembled in July at Applied Aerospace structures in Stockton, California.

The three concentric photon shields here will be assembled around the SPHEREx telescope to protect it from nearby light sources. Of course, the shield is mainly designed to block light from the sun and the earth (because the SPHEREx needs to be kept below-210 ℃).

"the NASA SPHEREx Space Telescope is beginning to look like it did when it reached Earth's orbit and began to map the entire sky," JPL said in a statement.

The name SPHEREx itself represents three scientific research tasks that reflect the three main periods of the observatory's observation of the universe's life cycle-the Universe History Spectrophotometer, the Reionization Age probe and the Ice Explorer.

In the nearby universe, it will look for evidence of water and other molecules (such as carbon monoxide) in disks around star-forming stars in our Milky way, according to the California Institute of Technology. These molecules are necessary for the origin of life as we know it, and they will exist in these systems in the form of ice.

In a very distant universe, SPHEREx will study the earliest times when stars and galaxies formed and the age of reionization-the first stars and galaxies that emit enough energy to ionize every hydrogen atom in the universe. The project will look at the collective light of these first galaxies in an attempt to understand how galaxy formation began and how it changed over time.
