Thank CTOnews.com netizens soft media Xinyou 1933769 for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Nov. 14, it is reported that Samsung is developing a new OLED material group for Apple, and next year's iPhone 16 may be equipped with a more energy-efficient display.

The OLED material group includes various components of the OLED screen, such as an overlay layer (CPL) that adjusts the optical properties of the screen. Each component is produced by a professional manufacturer and supplied to Samsung, which uses them to make the final OLED panel.

Different components of the material group can change the properties of the OLED panel, such as life, brightness, color accuracy, or manufacturing efficiency.

CTOnews.com noted that in April this year, The Elec reported that Samsung is using its "M12" material group to provide OLED panels for this year's iPhone 15 series, and is also developing a new OLED material group, code-named "M14", specifically for Apple's 2024 iPhone. The exact reason for the development was not clear at the time, but a new report from the media suggested that it might have something to do with making OLED panels more energy efficient.

The Elec quoted South Korean Ubi Research analyst Daejeong Yoon as saying that Samsung's OLED development roadmap has been focused on replacing blue fluorescent materials with blue phosphorescent materials, which can reduce the overall power consumption of OLED panels.

According to Yoon, Samsung originally planned to use more energy-efficient materials in the OLED panels developed for various folding phones in 2024, but this will not be easy and Samsung may reserve it for Apple's M14 material group.

"after next year's iPhone 16, M14 will also be used in iPhone 17 in 2025, and the duration of Apple's iPhone OLED material group will be increased to two years," Yoon said. "

According to multiple sources, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to have larger displays, with the iPhone 16 Pro 6.27in (rounded to 6.3in) and the iPhone 16 Pro Max 6.85in (rounded to 6.9in).

A report in September showed that the OLED panel of iPhone 16 may use microlens technology to maintain or increase the brightness of the display while reducing its power consumption. Meanwhile, a report in May said Apple planned to mass-produce more advanced microLED displays to reduce its dependence on Samsung and increase control of its supply chain, laying the groundwork for bringing this next-generation technology to iPhone.
