CTOnews.com, November 14 (Xinhua) the European Union's Digital Market Act (DMA) aims to limit the market influence of technology giants, requiring them to provide users with more choices and convenience, such as easily switching between social media platforms and web browsers, or freely deciding which pre-installed applications to use on their devices. The EU identified 22 "gatekeeper" services in September, involving six of the world's largest technology companies, which will have to comply with the new rules.

CTOnews.com notes that these technology companies include Alphabet (the parent company of Google), Amazon, Apple, Meta (formerly Facebook), Microsoft and Byte Jump (the owner of TikTok). The services of these companies are identified as "gatekeepers" and must communicate with competitors' information applications and allow users to choose the pre-installed applications on the device. companies that do not agree with this determination and requirement can file a complaint with the European Court of Justice based in Luxembourg by November 16.

A Microsoft spokesman said: "We accept the recognition of us by the EU Digital Market Act and will continue to work with the European Commission to fulfill DMA's obligations to Windows and LinkedIn."

According to industry insiders, other companies such as TikTok may pose challenges. A spokesman for TikTok had previously said they "at all disagreed" with the janitor's determination. Apple may also question its confirmation, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

Google has the largest number of services, including its Android operating system, mapping and search services, which will face stricter rules under DMA. Meta's Facebook, Instagram, Marketplace and WhatsApp are also identified as gatekeepers. A Google spokesman said they would not appeal the decision.
