CTOnews.com, November 14 (Xinhua) on November 13, Cai Lei, a patient with ALS and former vice president of JD.com Group, became the world's first tryout of a wearable artificial throat at Tsinghua University. His long-lost voice reappeared.

The artificial throat first collected Cai Lei's voice, and then through this artificial throat, Cai Lei made almost exactly the same voice as he normally did. He himself said that the degree of reduction was very high, which enabled gradually frozen people to communicate normally with people in the later stage. Cai Lei said happily: "Today is November 13, 2023. I am pleased to welcome the team of professors of Tsinghua University Ren Tianling to bring us the world's first wearable artificial larynx, which will help those who have difficulty in pronunciation or lose their voice to regain the ability to communicate. As the first person in the world to use artificial larynx, I feel very lucky. Science and technology can change lives, and I believe that human beings can overcome ALS."

CTOnews.com noted that according to a report in March this year, the wearable artificial larynx developed by Professor Ren Tianling and his team at the School of Integrated Circuits of Tsinghua University can sense laryngeal sound-related signals and recognize and synthesize them into speech through artificial intelligence models, with a reduction accuracy of more than 90%.

In October 2019, Cai Lei was diagnosed with ALS. After that, he focused all his energy and resources on how to effectively save the lives of people with ALS as soon as possible, organized the timely information exchange of more than 10,000 ALS patients at home and abroad, and established a patient-centered 360-degree full-life-cycle medical data platform; knowing that medical research lacks donated brains and spinal cords from ALS patients, he took the lead in signing up for donation and personally communicating with patients to participate.

This year is the fourth year that Cai Lei was diagnosed with ALS. Cai Lei once told reporters that he has almost lost his ability to take care of himself. "I have been preparing for the aftermath since last year, such as setting up charitable trusts, body donation, writing books, and so on. My greatest wish is that the drug research and development and clinical treatment of ALS will still accelerate after I leave."

But the good news is that on October 28, Cai Lei announced on the short video platform that his first medication was effective and that part of his body function improved.
