CTOnews.com, November 14 (Xinhua) according to the Nikkei News, the Japanese government is seeking a budget of 2 trillion yen (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 96.2 billion yuan) to support chip production and generative artificial intelligence technology, including increased aid to TSMC.

Tuyuan Pexels the Ministry of economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) seeks funding of about 650 billion yen (currently about 31.265 billion yuan) in a proposed supplementary budget document for the construction of the prototype production line and Intel research center of Japanese semiconductor company Rapidus, as well as support for advanced semiconductor design.

According to reports, about 770 billion yen (currently about 37.037 billion yuan) of the aid will go to TSMC's Kumamoto No. 2 plant, and TSMC has received a subsidy that covers half of the construction cost of its first plant.

In addition, about 460 billion yen (currently about 22.126 billion yuan) will be added to the proposed budget to support the construction of a new plant in Miyagi prefecture in the north-east. The money will also be used to assist power semiconductors, a key component of electric vehicles.

Japan also hopes to encourage domestic companies to develop generative AI technology, and has provided about 190 billion yen (currently about 9.139 billion yuan) to develop supercomputers to process data from AI learning models.

METI's spending proposal has been cut from the 3.4 trillion yen originally sought for semiconductors, but it is still higher than the 1.3 trillion yen provided in the main fiscal year budget for 2022. The Ministry's overall supplementary budget proposal is 4.9 trillion yen.

These include 800 billion yen for extending subsidies for electricity, household gas and gasoline, and 75 billion yen for the 2025 Osaka World Expo; and about 8.9 billion yen will be used to deal with the international reaction caused by the discharge of waste water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and the damaged fishing industry.
