Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, November 14, Intel released the latest Xeon processor performance data on SC23, including the measured results of the upcoming fifth-generation Emerald Rapids and the predicted results of the next-generation Granite Rapids.

Intel claims that the fifth generation of Emerald Rapids performance is 40% better than the fourth generation.

Intel's fifth-generation Emerald Rapids is pin-compatible with Sapphire Rapids on the Eagle Stream platform, uses the same LGA-4677 slot, and is upgraded to optimize the design, providing larger cache pools and better energy efficiency.

The company stressed that Emerald Rapids will provide workload-optimized performance and energy-saving computing, while introducing faster DDR5-5600 memory, resulting in higher bandwidth and transmission speed.

The fifth-generation Xeon will also provide CXL 1.0 and 2.0 support, as well as up to 80 PCIe Gen 5.0 channels. CTOnews.com summary details:

Intel Emerald Rapids (64-core Xeon 8592 +) and Sapphire Rapids (56-core Xeon 8480 +):

AI speech recognition: 1.4x

HPC LAMMPS (Copper): 1.4x

Media transcoding (FFMPEG): 1.2x

In addition, the fifth generation Xeon "Emerald Rapids" CPU also includes the following improvements:

3x large LLC cache

Faster memory speed

Higher number of CPU cores (up to 64 cores)

CXL Type 3 High bandwidth Interfac

Workload Optimization (Intel AE)

Optimized power mode

17% performance improvement per watt for GM

Offload the CPU core through the Intel accelerator engine to improve energy efficiency

Significant performance improvement in reasoning and training

Intel AMX with built-in AI acceleration

Preloaded optimized software stack

Intel also released internal performance prediction benchmarks for Granite Rapids Xeon CPU, all of which are designed with a full core, while the Sierra Forest will use E-core, providing up to 288 cores.

These chips will be compatible with the next generation Birch Stream platform, which has two different slots, LGA 4710 and LGA 7529.

Intel also confirmed that Granite Rapids Xeon CPU will provide more cores, higher frequencies and Intel AMX (Advanced Matrix extension) support.

In addition, Granite Rapids will add FP16 to expand precision support for AI-based developers. The platform will provide 12-channel MCRDIMM support to address large memory-constrained LLM models.

In terms of performance, compared with the existing fourth-generation Sapphire Rapids CPU, Intel estimates that Granite Rapids chips will achieve a 2.9-fold increase in AI reasoning (DeepMD+LAAMPS), a 2.8-fold increase in memory bandwidth, and nearly three times the performance improvement in AI workload. Of course, these are only rough performance predictions, and the final performance test results may be different.

Finally, Intel also showed some HPC performance benchmarks for its Xeon Max 9480 CPU, which has 56 cores and 64GB HBM memory. Compared with the 96-core AMD EPYC 9654, Xeon Max CPU has a 30% performance advantage, while the EPYC 9645 is $11805 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 86058 yuan) and the Xeon Max 9480 is $12980 (currently about 94624 yuan).

Both CPU have a power rating of 360amp 350W, but the Sapphire Rapids CPU has higher power, which may result in a lower overall cost (TCO) than the AMD solution. In addition, AMD offers its 3D V-Cache enhancements in the Genoa-X series to provide more competitive performance in these bandwidth-constrained workload scenarios.

To sum up, Intel will launch the fifth-generation Xeon Emerald Rapids CPU series on December 14, while Granite Rapids CPU will make its debut in the second half of 2024 shortly after Sierra Forest.
