Are you considering a pair of anti-blue glasses that can protect your eyes? Don't waste your money. Scientists have found that anti-blue glasses do not reduce the adverse effects of blue light on eyes and sleep-at least not in the short term.

Blue light is part of the visible spectrum, which not only exists in natural light, but also emits blue light from artificial light sources such as mobile phones and computer screens. Blue light helps to improve people's alertness, enhance memory and cognitive ability, and improve mood. However, blue light interferes with the body clock at night, leading to sleep disorders and poor sleep quality. In addition, long-term exposure to blue light can also cause eye fatigue and may even damage vision.
As a result, many people choose to wear anti-blue glasses in order to protect their eyesight, hoping to reduce the damage caused by mobile phones, computers and other electronic devices to their eyes.
Since the beginning of this century, more and more optometrists have begun to recommend anti-blue glasses, and the sales of these glasses are also increasing year by year. Related advertisements claim that anti-blue glasses can effectively relieve eye fatigue and sleep disorders caused by prolonged exposure to blue light. However, are anti-blue-ray glasses really effective?
Anti-blue glasses can only filter out a small amount of blue light. Recently, in a review paper, scientists from the University of Melbourne, the University of London and Monash University in Australia analyzed 17 randomized controlled trials. to see if anti-blue glasses really help protect eyesight.
The results show that anti-blue glasses do not reduce the adverse effects of blue light on eyes and sleep-at least in the short term.
In addition, the scientists found no evidence that the glasses protect the retina, the part of the eye that converts light into nerve signals, from damage. Part of the reason is that the relevant experimental studies have not assessed this.
"this paper is outspoken," said Andrew Przybylski, a psychologist at the University of Oxford who was not involved in the study. "it gives the public an opportunity to reflect on whether they really need to change their habits or spend money on products to deal with the digital age challenges they are worried about."
The study also points out that our eyes receive only about 1/1000 of the amount of blue light from man-made light sources such as mobile phones and computer screens. More importantly, anti-blue glasses can only filter out 10% or 25% of blue light.
Lead author Sumeer Singh, an ophthalmologist at the University of Melbourne, said: "to filter out more blue light, you need glasses to have a brighter amber color, but this will have a big impact on the wearer's color perception."
Laura Downie, a clinical scientist at the University of Melbourne and correspondent author of the paper, added: "people should be aware of these findings before deciding whether to buy anti-blue glasses."
The effect of long-term wearing anti-blue glasses is still unknown, but this paper only deals with short-term studies, ranging from one day to five weeks, so more research is needed to verify the effectiveness of anti-blue glasses in long-term use.
For this reason, Singh called for high-level, large-scale clinical trials, long-term follow-up studies of different types of people to determine whether there are any benefits of anti-blue glasses and whether these benefits apply to everyone.
But if you're already wearing anti-blue glasses, don't worry. Research shows that wearing anti-blue glasses does not have any negative effects, except for some symptoms such as discomfort and headaches usually associated with wearing glasses.
