Because the ice sheet of the Greenland glacier holds enough water, if it melts completely, it will raise sea levels by at least 20 feet (6 meters).

Anders Anke Bjorck, an assistant professor in the department of earth science and natural resource management at the University of Copenhagen, said studies of more than a thousand glaciers in the region show that the rate of glacier melting has entered a new phase in the past two decades.

Using satellite images and 200000 old photos, the scientists studied the development of glaciers over the past 130 years and concluded that the average reduction in glaciers is now 25 meters per year, compared with 5-6 meters about 20 years ago.

EU scientists said earlier this month that global temperatures had risen by nearly 1.2C from pre-industrial levels, and that 2023 was "almost certainly" the hottest year in 125000 years.

Jorgen Eivind Olesen, director of the climate institute at Aarhus University, says lowering temperatures requires a global effort to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

"if we start to see the mass loss of glaciers several times faster than in the last century, then we can expect the ice sheet to follow the same path, but with a slower and longer time scale," said William Mccolgan, a senior researcher at the Danish and Greenland Geological Survey (GEUS).

The Greenland ice sheet contributed 17.3% of the observed sea-level rise between 2006 and 2018, while glaciers contributed 21%. There are about 22000 glaciers in Greenland.
