Changjiang Storage, China's largest flash memory chipmaker, recently filed a patent infringement lawsuit against US memory chip giant Micron and its subsidiaries, asking the court to ban Micron from using a number of 3D NAND technology patents of Changjiang Storage, and to compensate for losses and litigation costs. According to Cheung Kong Storage, a number of Meguiar's solid-state drive products are suspected of infringing eight patents related to the formation and control of 3D NAND memory, straight-through array contact (TAC), reading method and multi-layer stacking method.
According to CTOnews.com, memory chips are mainly divided into two categories: DRAM (dynamic random storage) and NAND (flash memory). The former belongs to volatile memory, that is, once the data is lost immediately, it is generally used as memory to assist CPU (central processing unit) for calculation; the latter is a non-volatile memory, used to store data, used to make solid state hard drives.
Changjiang Storage pointed out in the indictment that Meguiar unauthorised use of patented Changjiang Storage technology to compete with the market and protect its market share, and that Meguiar failed to pay reasonable fees for the use of the above patents, infringing upon the interests of Changjiang Storage and curbing the innovation power of the latter. It also alleges that Meguiar cited patents related to Changjiang Storage in its patent documents, proving that it was important for Micron to understand the patent portfolio of Changjiang Storage, but that Micron did not take any practical action to seek a patent license for Changjiang Storage.
Cheung Kong Storage also said in the indictment that if the court fails to issue a permanent injunction on Meguiar's patent infringement, it should formulate relevant plans, such as Micron paying patent licensing fees to Changjiang Storage.
Changjiang Storage was founded in July 2016, headquartered in Wuhan, Hubei Province, specializing in the design and manufacture of 3D NAND flash memory chips. Changjiang Storage uses a self-developed Xtacking (Crystal Stack) architecture, which has caught up with foreign giants in technology. In the field of NAND, Changjiang Storage has mass produced 128layer 3D stacking products in 2021, and 232layer products have also begun to increase.
Meguiar is a leading memory chip company, and Changjiang Storage is a competitor in the NAND market. According to Jibang Consulting, Meguiar ranked fifth in the NAND market with a market share of 13% in the second quarter of 2023. In terms of market volume, there is a big gap between Yangtze River storage and Meguiar.
