CTOnews.com, Nov. 12, can Apple's Vision Pro become a strong competitor in the enterprise AR market? When Vision Pro was released on WWDC in June, it was mainly aimed at the consumer market, but Apple also demonstrated some enterprise-level application scenarios, including augmented reality applications for interior space. CTOnews.com noted that the two enterprise apps mentioned on WWDC are PTC and JigSpace, and this week Apple released a brief interview with the two companies to discuss their experience with Vision Pro.

PTC's CAD software PTC is a CAD (computer aided Design) software company with a history of more than 30 years and is still one of the market leaders. Desktop PC workstations and tablets are still good ways to design complex engineering parts and machines, but AR and VR are better suited to actually show what they look like in the real world than traditional screens. On Vision Pro, the application of PTC even supports multiple headers in the same space to view the same real-size CAD model. PTC has also developed a web real-time editing feature that allows changes to the CAD model in their iPad CAD app to be immediately reflected in the real-size model on Vision Pro. "I'm almost used to VR. But when I wear an Apple Vision Pro, walk around digital objects and interact with other people in real time-that's what stops you," the company's AR / VR technical director told Apple.

JigSpace's airflow visualization JigSpace claims that they already have "the highest rated AR app in the world" on iPad, allowing users to import 3D models and customize and animate them in 3D presentations, which can include images, audio, text tags, and so on. This is the ideal application for Vision Pro, which has worked with Alfa Romeo to create a demonstration "Jig" that shows the C43 Formula one car in real scale and visualizes the airflow above it.

"one of ours is a senior 3D artist," JigSpace's technical director told Apple. "when he first saw the true size of his model in space and walked freely around it with his hands, he really cried." Like PTC, JigSpace will support multi-person collaboration in the same space, where multiple heads can see the same dummy object, and can even draw in 3D space, circle points of interest, and leave lasting comments in the air.

Can Vision Pro compete with Magic Leap, Microsoft and Varjo? For enterprise customers and enterprise applications, Vision Pro will compete directly with the three existing enterprise AR heads: Magic Leap 2, Microsoft's HoloLens 2 and Varjo's XR-3 series. The prices of Magic Leap 2 and HoloLens 2 are similar to those of Vision Pro, but with transparent optics, the field of vision is narrower, and the CPU used is older and weaker. Magic Leap 2's battery life is significantly longer, and it and HoloLens 2 should be more comfortable. The Varjo XR-3 series has the same field of view as the Vision Pro and has a higher definition in the central cone area, but the head display costs almost twice as much as the Vision Pro and must be connected to an expensive Windows workstation PC through a cable. This does greatly improve the fidelity and scope of the software it can run, but limits its use in large collaborative spaces.

Of course, another dark horse in the enterprise AR market may be Meta's Quest 3. Although it offers a significantly worse color perspective experience than Vision Pro or Varjo and does not support features such as dynamic occlusion, it is much cheaper and may attract some organizations, especially small companies.

One of Apple's key advantages is that it is relatively easy for them to use the Apple developer toolkit they may already use to extend their existing iPad applications to AR. This may reduce the cost, time, and complexity of adopting header-based AR, which cannot be easily matched by other companies that rely on Unity and Unreal engines.
