IBM NorthPole chip test: 25 times higher energy efficiency than common 12nm GPU and 14nm CPU

CTOnews.com IBM's NorthPole architecture chips have been in development for nearly a decade and are now getting better and more powerful.

Officials have now published a set of NorthPole benchmark results in Science, a new milestone.

According to tests on the ResNet-50 model, 12 nm chips based on TrueNorth architecture are 25 times more efficient than commonly used 12 nm GPUs and 14 nm CPUs.

According to IBM, NorthPole also outperforms all mainstream architectures, including GPUs based on 4 nm processes, in terms of latency and space required for computation.

So how did it achieve this result? Because its 256 cores are integrated into a memory chip without individual connections, NorthPole uses 22 billion transistors, each of which can perform 2048 operations.

The company says its architecture eliminates the von Neumann bottleneck, which surrounds delays caused by data transfers between CPU and RAM in most systems. As a result, it can run faster than the best GPUs on the market, including Nvidia's most powerful AI graphics cards.

"Architecturally, NorthPole blurs the line between compute and memory," says Dharmendra Modha of IBM Research. At the single core level, NorthPole behaves as near-memory computation; at the input/output level outside the chip, it behaves as active memory. "

CTOnews.com notes that AMD has explored similar techniques and successfully integrated memory and compute fabric into a single component. Last month, Xilinx demonstrated its Virtex XCVU7P card, which includes eight memory accelerator modules.

IBM has added memory chips to each of its NorthPole chips, which they believe are ideal for emerging AI use cases, including those related to computer vision. It has also been tested for natural language processing and speech recognition. NorthPole is also suitable for edge applications that process large amounts of data in real time.
