Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, November 11, according to Austrian media Future Zone local time on Friday, there have been more and more problems and failures in Extreme mobile solid-state drives since the beginning of this year. Attingo, a data recovery manufacturer with 25 years of experience, recently announced that it had found the problem.

Markus H ä fele, general manager of Attingo, said in an interview, "at least one person gives us SanDisk's mobile hard drive every week, and they don't work properly." After research, professionals found the problem with the affected mobile hard drive.

Markus H ä fele claimed, "this is definitely a hardware problem, there is a weakness in its design and structure, and there is a problem with the whole soldering process of the solid state drive." The components on the hard drive must be welded to the circuit board, but the welding material used by SanDisk produces bubbles, he said.

Attingo, the source of the ▲ drawing, also said that some of the components used were "too large for the layout provided by the circuit board". As a result, as long as the relevant component protrudes slightly on the circuit board, it will weaken its contact with the predetermined pad, which will cause the solder joint to break suddenly.

Attingo's data recovery engineers say these "seemingly too large" parts cannot be firmly fastened for a long time. As for why the solder produces bubbles, the explanation given by the engineer is as follows: either it is caused by temperature and humidity, or the quality of the solder is poor.

Markus H ä fele believes that SanDisk should recall affected users because these products cannot be repaired remotely.

Previously on CTOnews.com:

Western Digital has previously acknowledged problems with SanDisk's Extreme mobile hard drives, such as sudden erasure and unreadability, saying the problem occurred on a batch of hard drives that were mass-produced at the end of 2022 and mainly affected 4TB models. Subsequently, the official release of firmware updates to address its SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro SSD reliability issues.

But in August this year, foreign science and technology media, such as The Verge and PetaPixel, reported that Western Digital sent firmware updates to SanDisk Extreme V2 and Extreme Pro V2 of 2TB and 4TB models, instead of curbing the problem, more models were affected.
