CTOnews.com November 10, 40 years ago today-- on November 10, 1983, Microsoft unveiled for the first time its new PC operating system based on graphical user interface (GUI), which is named Windows.

At that time, Windows required two floppy drives and 192KB's RAM memory, which Microsoft described as a device driver for MS-DOS 2.0.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates developed a "strong interest" in creating a GUI-based PC operating system after seeing an early operating system with a "similar design" in 1983. In the same year, Apple launched the Lisa, a computer with an GUI, which sells for nearly $10000, and the Lisa sells for more than $22000 today (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 160000 yuan).

Microsoft wanted to develop a GUI operating system that was "much cheaper than the competition", with a target price of between $100 and $250. When the system was officially released, many MS-DOS computer manufacturers, such as Compaq,Zenith and DEC, and software companies such as Ashton-Tate and Lotus, pledged support for Windows 1.0, but IBM decided not to support Windows.

After that, IBM launched another operating system, TopView, which ended in failure.

According to Microsoft's plan at the time, Windows 1.0 was scheduled to be officially launched in April 1984, but was eventually postponed to November 20, 1985. However, Windows 1.0 did not sell well in its first two years on the market, selling only 500000 units. It was not until the release of Windows 3.0 in 1990 that Microsoft's Windows operating system was "truly" successful.

During the system period of the Windows 1.0 series, Microsoft actually launched four versions, namely Windows 1.01, Windows 1.02, Windows 1.03 and Windows 1.04. It is worth noting that Windows 1.01 is the first public release for the public.
