Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens, soft media new friends 1933769 and soft media users 1520111 for their clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) Qualcomm and Iridium originally planned to provide satellite-based connectivity for Android phones, but the project fell through less than a year after Guan Xuan worked together.

On Thursday, local time, Iridium announced that Qualcomm had cancelled the partnership, a decision that took effect on December 3. The two companies have successfully developed and demonstrated the technology, and despite technical success, major handset makers have not applied the technology to end products, the company said.

However, Iridium still sees great potential in the satellite communications market, saying it is "now free to work directly with smartphone OEMs, other chipmakers and smartphone operating system developers".

CTOnews.com previously reported that Qualcomm announced plans to introduce satellite-based connectivity to the next generation of Android smartphones on January 6 this year, and proposed a satellite-based two-way messaging solution, Snapdragon Satellite. The scheme, which will use satellite constellations provided by Iridium, claims to provide "true global coverage" from the South Pole to the North Pole. According to the original plan, smartphones using the technology will be available in the second half of 2023.
