It was previously reported that Modern Warfare III was initially considered an expansion package of Modern Warfare II, but Activision decided to make it a complete sequel. It was originally supposed to take place in Mexico, but the completed version completely rewrites the whole story, with the villain Vladimir Makarov as the protagonist.

According to the report, Sledgehammer Games had planned to produce "call of Duty: advanced Warfare II", a follow-up to "Advanced Warfare" in 2014, but it was shelved in subsequent development, leading to a reduction in the development schedule of "Modern Warfare III".

CTOnews.com noted that both former and current employees initially thought that "Modern Warfare III" was just an extension, and that the studio had to work overtime all night to complete the game development. In addition, the game also has the problem of pipeline inefficiency, because Sledgehammer has to turn to Infinity Ward for help.

IGN also gave only a 4-point rating on the single-player campaign section of call of Duty: modern Warfare 3. IGN said the single-character plot was "too repetitive" and was a "pale imitation" of past works made up of immature storylines.
