CTOnews.com November 10 news, the European Commission has issued a formal request for information to TikTok and YouTube under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The Committee requests companies to provide more information on the measures taken to fulfil their obligations under DSA relating to the protection of minors, including obligations relating to risk assessment and mitigation measures for the protection of online minors, in particular with regard to mental and physical health risks and risks for minors using its services.

TikTok and YouTube must provide the requested information to the Committee by November 30, 2023. The Committee will assess the next steps based on its assessment of the responses, which may require formal initiation of proceedings under article 66 of the DSA.

CTOnews.com notes that pursuant to DSA Article 74 (2), the Committee may impose fines for incorrect, incomplete or misleading information provided in an information request. In the absence of a response, the Committee may decide to request information by decision. In such cases, failure to respond by the deadline may result in periodic payment of fines.

After being designated as hyperscale online platforms, TikTok and YouTube must comply with a full set of regulations introduced by DSA, including assessing and mitigating risks associated with the dissemination of illegal and harmful content, any negative impact on the exercise of fundamental rights, including children's rights, and the protection of minors.
