CTOnews.com, Nov. 9 (Xinhua)-- BMW said that starting from next year, it will provide driving assistance without steering wheel for a number of models in the UK.
According to Autocar, Matt Bacon, BMW's product director for large models in the UK, said all new 5-series models, including the pure streetcar i5, as well as BMW i7 large electric sedans and iX electric SUV, will have this function.
BMW is taking advantage of new British rules to allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel while paying attention to road conditions, a function also known as L2 + assistant driving.
It is worth mentioning that Ford is launching its steering-free system BlueCruise in the UK, which will be used in the Ford Mustang Mach E electric SUV.
Bacon said the BMW system, known as Highway Assistant in the US, is pushing for it to be renamed Motorway Assistant in the UK.
This feature is part of Driving Assistant Professional and is available in the new 5-Series technology package Plus (Tech Pack Plus), which includes adaptive cruise control and lane centering functions.
BMW has not yet determined whether the system is available in the form of a monthly subscription or an one-time charge at the time of purchase.
It has yet to be determined on which roads the system can be used, and Bacon says the minimum requirement is a two-way lane with a central barrier. If driving to a qualified road, the vehicle will give a reminder.
BMW will use the camera in front of the driver to identify whether the driver is paying attention to the road ahead. The system will use the vehicle's active Lane change Assistant (Active Lane Change Assistant) to allow drivers to change lanes without having to hold the steering wheel. The driver is advised to change lanes and the driver confirms it by looking at the rearview mirror on the side.
CTOnews.com noted that Porsche is also expected to offer L2 + driving assistance on its new electric Macan, which will be launched next year, as part of the Supervision suite provided by Intel's Mobileye Corp., which contains 11 cameras.
