CTOnews.com November 9, Samsung announced in a press release today that Samsung Research Institute has partnered with Google to develop a 3D spatial audio technology, IAMF, which was adopted by the Open Media Alliance (AOM) in October 2023.

According to reports, although 3D audio has many advantages, but limited by technology, it has been difficult to be used in home audio devices for a long time. Hwang SungHee, an engineer at Samsung Research Institute, said that the current 3D audio information from audio and video content could not be correctly interpreted by home audio systems such as TV speakers or sound bar, resulting in a limited audio experience.

To this end, Samsung partnered with Google to develop an audio solution. Samsung said that if device manufacturers can read 3D audio data, they can adjust the sound in the audio device to get an "immersive" audio experience through standard TV speakers or speakers at home.

IAMF has three characteristics: vertical audio, scene analysis based on AI and audio customization. According to engineer Nam WooHyun, the technology can make sound more and more "multi-directional", allowing listeners to hear sounds in front, rear, side, top and bottom, such as birds above their heads through televisions that use the technology. "I want users to feel immersive, and I want to continue this research until 3D audio is applied to Samsung smartphones."

In addition, IAMF can also use AI and deep learning techniques to analyze scenes, emphasizing key parts of the content-such as background music, sound effects, or character conversations in some scenes in movies and TV dramas.

As for audio customization, IAMF technology allows users to adjust the sound effects according to their preferences, whether it's scene sounds or character conversations. Officials show a scene in which users can choose whether to highlight the commentary or the live sound while watching the game.

Officials say IAMF is the first open source-based audio technology standard adopted by the Open Media Alliance, which means that companies or individual creators across the industry can adopt the technology and expand its use.
