On the evening of November 8, Beijing time, people familiar with the matter revealed that Amazon will invest millions of dollars in training the large language model (LLM), hoping it can compete with the top artificial models of OpenAI and Alphabet.

According to sources, Amazon's artificial intelligence model, internally codenamed "Olympus", has 2 trillion parameters, a scale that could make it one of the largest models currently under training in the world. OpenAI's GPT-4 is one of the best models in the world, which is rumored to have 1 trillion parameters.

Amazon declined to comment on the news.

The team is led by Rohit Prasad, the former head of Alexa, who now reports directly to Andy Jassy, chief executive. As the chief scientist of Amazon artificial General Intelligence (AGI), Prasad brought in researchers who have been working on Alexa AI and the Amazon science team to study the training model, using dedicated resources to integrate the AI work of the entire company.

So far, Amazon has trained smaller models such as Titan. The company has also partnered with artificial intelligence model startups such as Anthropic and AI21 Labs to provide these models to AWS users.

Amazon believes that having self-developed artificial intelligence models will make its products on AWS more attractive, because corporate customers want the best-performing models on AWS, according to people familiar with the matter. These sources added that Amazon has not yet set a specific timetable for the release of the new model.

LLM is the basic technology of artificial intelligence tools, which can learn from massive data sets and generate human-like responses.

Considering the required computing power, it is more expensive to train larger artificial intelligence models. In an earnings call in April, Amazon executives said the company would increase its investment in LLM and generative artificial intelligence, while reducing the delivery and transportation of its retail business.
