Soumen Mandal, a senior analyst, commented on the market developments.

The electric vehicle battery ecosystem is undergoing rapid transformation. In the next few years, many new battery suppliers, such as ACC, Verkor, Northvolt and E4V, are expected to have a place in the battery supply chain. In addition to professional battery suppliers, carmakers such as Tesla, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis are also working on internal batteries and battery packs, which will make the battery supply chain more competitive.

Mandal added:

At present, Chinese and South Korean suppliers dominate the industry. Chinese companies such as Ningde time, BYD, AVIC Lithium, Guoxuan Tech, Xin Wanda and Funeng Technology have a combined market share of 2/3, while South Korean giants LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI and SK Innovation have about 25 per cent of the market. As sales of electric vehicles grow around the world, countries will try to build self-sustaining battery supply chains. This will allow local industry participants to flourish while forcing some participants to withdraw from the market as competition intensifies.

Among car companies, Tesla, BYD and Volkswagen used nearly 45 per cent of total electric vehicle battery sales in the first half of 2023. Counterpoint said the surge in sales of Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y played a key role in driving the growth of Ningde Times and LG energy solutions. Ningde Times provides batteries for the standard versions of Model 3 and Model Y produced by Tesla's Shanghai plant, while LG Energy Solutions is a major battery supplier of Model 3 and Model Y high-performance versions.

On the other hand, electric vehicles from Hyundai, Kia and Ford have played an active role in increasing the market share of SK Innovation, with Rivian and BMW relying mainly on Samsung SDI as battery suppliers. In North America, Panasonic, as the main supplier of batteries for Tesla models, occupies a key position.
