Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Nov. 8 (Xinhua)-- the Indian government is considering a policy requiring all mobile phones sold in India to support ATSC 3.0, a technology that allows phones to receive live television signals. However, mobile phone brands are opposed to the idea because it will increase the cost of hardware and thus raise the price of mobile phones.
Adding live TV hardware to mobile phones will add $30 to the cost, according to letters reviewed by Reuters. ATSC 3.0 (also known as NextGenTV) technology is very popular in the United States, mainly used in televisions, can provide 4K resolution of television broadcast signals, and can accurately locate the geographical location of television signals. However, the Indian government hopes that this technology can also be used in mobile phones in the future.
In addition, brands such as Samsung believe that forcing phones to support ATSC 3.0 will affect their existing production plans. The Indian Mobile phone and Electronics Association (ICEA), a lobby group of handset makers such as Apple and Xiaomi, has opposed the government's proposal in a letter on October 16, saying that no major global mobile phone brand supports ATSC 3.0.
In a letter to India's Ministry of Communications, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm and Samsung said adding live TV would also reduce the phone's battery life and cellular network signals. In countries such as South Korea and the United States, the use of mobile live TV is very low because of the lack of sufficient equipment to support the technology. However, this technology is very popular in Japan.
At present, the Government of India is considering this proposal and there is no fixed timetable for its implementation. CTOnews.com noted that in recent months the Indian government has also made a requirement that all mobile phones sold in India be compatible with NavIC, India's homegrown global positioning and navigation system. In another proposal, the government also wants to require all mobile phones to be tested for security.
