CTOnews.com, Nov. 8, Apple recently updated its support documentation to make it clear that the new 24-inch iMac with an M3 chip supports high-impedance headphones.

The new iMac has a built-in 3.5mm headphone port on the left, which can automatically detect impedance and adaptive voltage output, and is equipped with an enhanced digital-to-analog converter that supports a sampling rate of up to 96 kHz, allowing users to listen to high-fidelity, full-resolution audio using supported headphones.

CTOnews.com attached the official Apple statement as follows:

The 3.5mm headphone Jack on compatible Mac computers has DC load detection and adaptive voltage output. The Mac can detect the impedance of the connected device and adjust the output accordingly for low and high impedance headphones and line level audio devices.

If the impedance of the connected headset is less than 150ohms, the headphone Jack can provide up to 1.25V RMS. For headphones with an impedance of 150 to 1k ohms, the headphone Jack provides a 3-volt RMS. In this way, there may be no need for an external headphone amplifier.

With impedance detection, adaptive voltage output and built-in digital-to-analog converters that support sampling rates up to 96 kHz, you can enjoy high-fidelity, full-resolution audio directly from the headphone Jack on the Mac.

The built-in headphone Jack of the following Mac computers supports high impedance headphones:

IMac launched in 2023

MacBook Air launched in or after 2022

MacBook Pro launched in or after 2021

Mac mini launched in 2023

Mac Studio launched in or after 2022

Mac Pro launched in 2023
