CTOnews.com, Nov. 7 (Xinhua)-- the first full-color images of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Euclid Space Telescope (Euclid) launched on July 1 this year have been released, which not only show the splendor of the universe, but also indicate that the telescope is expected to unravel the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. The Euclid Space Telescope aims to explore the "dark universe" and will observe 95% of the unknown matter and energy in the universe, that is, dark matter and dark energy, which are the mysterious factors contributing to the gathering of galaxies and the accelerated expansion of the universe.
Within a month of its launch, the Euclid Space Telescope flew to Lagrange Point 2 (L2), about 1 million miles from Earth, a gravitational stability point "behind the Earth from the sun" and home to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
Ren é Laureijs, a project scientist with the Euclid Space Telescope, said the mission could be seen as a continuation of the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, which is mapping the Milky way and its stars and satellite galaxies. But the Euclid Space Telescope has a broader field of vision. it can go back 10 billion years to observe some of the earliest galaxies in the universe to create a map of the distribution of matter. this can help us determine the nature of matter and energy that are difficult to detect.
"what we need to do is look at the universe 10 billion years ago and look back," Laurez said. "then we will see how the universe evolved from 10 billion years ago to the present, which will tell us how the universe expanded."
CTOnews.com with the Euclid Space Telescope's first five full-color images are as follows:
IC 342galaxy
The spiral galaxy IC 342is about 1070 light-years from Earth. If it is not obscured by gas and dust from the Milky way, it will become one of the brightest objects in the sky.
Perseus galaxy cluster
This image shows more than 1000 galaxies glowing in the constellation Perseus, about 240 million light-years from Earth. The cluster has thousands of galaxies surrounded by superheated gas and is considered one of the most massive structures in the universe.
Pink stars in NGC 6822
Located just 1.6 million light-years from Earth, NGC 6822 looks less like a galaxy and more like a mist, and its pink stars seem to be floating in dark space. NGC 6822 marks the first irregular galaxy observed by Euclid. Although NGC 6822 belongs to the same galaxy cluster as the Milky way, it is surprising that it contains heavy metals that are not common in young, still-forming galaxies.
NGC 6397 cluster
The NGC 6397 cluster consists of thousands of stars constrained by gravity and orbit in a galactic disk about 7800 light-years from Earth.
The iconic Horsehead Nebula
The Horsehead Nebula is a large dark molecular cloud in Orion about 1500 light-years from Earth. The clouds around the nebula have dissipated, and the pillars of the Horsehead Nebula will fall apart in 5 million years.
The Euclid Space Telescope will spend six years taking huge views of the entire sky and, like Gaia, compiling PB-level data into several versions for astronomers to sift through. In the process, scientists hope to learn more about dark matter and dark energy, two of the biggest astronomical mysteries.
