Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Coje_He for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, November 7 (Xinhua)-- Firefox browser Firefox's development version control tool is shifting from Mercurial to Git to ease the pressure on its development team.

Mozilla announced the news in an email a few days ago, saying that "for a long time, Firefox desktop development supports both Mercurial and Git. This dual SCM requirement places a huge burden on the already stretched team. We have decided to move Firefox development to Git."

According to reports, the repository will be hosted on GitHub, but the move is expected to "take at least six months to start the migration." Once the migration is complete, support for Mercurial will be removed. In the initial phase of the migration, Git will become the main version control tool for one-way synchronization with Mercurial. In the second phase, the team migrates all the infrastructure that relies on Mercurial to Git.

CTOnews.com Note: Mercurial is an open source distributed code version control tool written mainly in Python and licensed under GPL (GNU General Public license) version 2. It was created by Olivia Mackall in 2005 as an alternative to BitKeeper to manage the source code of the Linux kernel in case the free version of BitKeeper is discontinued.

However, Linus Torvald, the father of Linux, subsequently developed Git for Linux version management, and Git has been increasingly used in other projects ever since.
