Despite a decline in the number of global trademark and design applications in 2022, there were about 3.46 million patent applications worldwide, an increase for the third year in a row and an all-time high, according to the report.

Tuyuan Pixabay China, the United States, Japan, South Korea and Germany are the countries with the largest number of patent applications in 2022. China continued to account for nearly half of the global total of about 1.58 million patent applications in 2022, while India's patent applications increased by 31.6% in 2022. China and India are the main drivers of global patent application growth in 2022. Most IP applications take place in Asia, continuing a long-standing trend. In 2022, Asia accounted for 67.9%, 67.8% and 70.3% of global patent, trademark and industrial design applications, respectively.

CTOnews.com noted that 13 of the top 20 countries filed more patent applications in 2022 than in 2021. The biggest increase was in India, where applications increased by 31.6% in 2022. Applications also showed strong growth in Switzerland (+ 6.1%), China (+ 3.1%), Austria (+ 2.5%) and the United Kingdom (+ 2.5%).

The significant increase in resident applications was the main driver of overall growth in China and India, while strong growth in foreign applications was driven by overall growth in Austria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
