509 Institute of the Eighth Academy of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, together with Harbin Engineering University, 804 Institute of the Eighth Academy and Space Company of the Eighth Academy, formed a polar satellite communication project team to carry out research on key technologies of long-distance reliable communication on "Xuelong 2," realizing the first VHF data exchange communication at the North Pole in China, exploring the ice sea with scientific and technological strength and assisting marine scientific research.

According to introduction, since the opening of the Arctic route, China has been committed to improving the three-dimensional network observation and communication support capability in the polar shipping field, focusing on solving the problem of ship navigation safety guarantee in the polar route. Taking the Arctic Ocean scientific research as an opportunity, the project team incorporated satellite communication into the basic guarantee of polar navigation and polar communication, providing satellite communication services with completely independent intellectual property rights for China's polar scientific research.

At present, polar region communication mainly relies on short-wave communication or foreign satellite communication, which has problems such as unable to communicate in the whole process, low communication bandwidth, limited communication duration and untimely communication information. The project team has formed a data communication system integrating heaven and earth through independently developed traffic VDES test satellite and ship-borne communication terminal, and carried out polar region route (polar region)-satellite-domestic communication test. During the total voyage of more than 15,000 nautical miles and the voyage duration of 78 days, the test data of communication physical characteristics in high latitude (75°N-90°N) region were obtained through satellite-ground communication frequency no less than 5 times per day, and the satellite communication capability in polar complex environment was verified.

According to Shanghai Academy of Aerospace Technology, the second phase of the project is expected to start in August 2024. At that time, 509 Institute will cooperate with various units to carry out polar broadband communication test. Subsequently, it is expected to provide large-capacity real-time data communication guarantee with full coverage in the south and north polar regions, providing safer, more reliable and more efficient satellite communication services for polar scientific research, polar merchant ships and polar tourism in China.
