Fraser Marlow's team purchased Stars from two different gray sites and used the data collected to build a model in Dagster that could detect fake Stars on GitHub projects.

It is reported that the model for detecting false Stars mainly has two algorithms, one is to identify accounts with "only target stars and default avatars," and the other is to identify accounts with "similar overall active records and similar behaviors."

Fraser Marlow finally found that on the GitHub platform, an encrypted currency project called Okcash had the most serious brush stars, 97% of the 759 Stars of the project were brushed, and the related "brush stars" ash production earned at least $3.41 million-4.37 million (currently about 24.893 million-31.901 million yuan) as early as 2018-2019.

CTOnews.com also found that Okcash founder Oktoshi San recently responded, claiming that "Okcash does not care about false indicators such as Stars and forks."

It is worth mentioning that after Fraser Marlow published an investigation report on GitHub Stars fake stars, almost all the stars he paid for disappeared within a week.
