Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

RISC-V instruction set, as a rising star in the semiconductor industry, is loved by China's semiconductor manufacturers. Today, the document will join you to understand who this "potential stock" is.

What is RISC-V? RISC-V (Reduced Instruction Set Computing-five) is an open source instruction set architecture (ISA) based on reduced instruction set (Reduced Instruction Set Computing,RISC) principles.

Instruction set is the interface between software and hardware, which can be regarded as the "translator" of the communication between software and hardware, and is an indispensable basic part of the chip industry.

At present, according to the mainstream classification, instruction sets can be divided into two camps:

Complex instruction set (Complex Instruction Set Computer,CISC) represented by x86 instruction set

Reduced instruction set (Reduced Instruction Set Computer,RISC) represented by ARM instruction set

X86 and ARM can be called the top two in the server market:

The x86 architecture is dominated by Intel and AMD.

ARM architecture accounts for more than 95% of the mobile terminal market.

However, both of these two architectures are dominated by overseas manufacturers, x86 is closed by Intel, and ARM charges high licensing fees.

In 2010, in order to find a relatively independent and open source chip architecture, the research team at the University of California, Berkeley decided to design a new set of instructions from scratch.

Three months later, a team of only four members completed the development of RISC-V and decided to open it up under the BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) open source protocol.

What's different about RISC-V?

What's the difference between RISC-V and x86 / ARM? With x86 / ARM, why is there still RISC-V? Apart from the relative independence and open source at the beginning, what's the difference between RISC-V and x86 / ARM? Mr. documentation has prepared the following comparison table for your reference.

Since the establishment of RISC-V Research and Development in 2015, the RISC-V Foundation has more than 350 members, including semiconductor design and manufacturing companies, system integrators, equipment manufacturers, military enterprises, scientific research institutions, universities and other organizations. Among them, senior members include Google, Ali, Huawei and other well-known technology companies at home and abroad.

Since the RISC-V instruction set was issued in 2010, it has developed rapidly and has strong vitality in a short period of 13 years.

As to whether it can promote the important trend change of CPU and make domestic semiconductors "bend overtaking", the document gentleman and everyone will wait and see.
