CTOnews.com Microsoft has acquired a head-related technology that uses see-through waveguide displays and hand tracking to interact with virtual objects in virtual worlds and improve audio/tactile feedback, according to a listing published by the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO).

In Microsoft's patent schematic, users wearing the headset walk outdoors, and the headset automatically displays nearby attractions and information about things.

The head-mounted technology, which uses mostly lensless cameras and machine learning to track users 'eyes and hands, can be more efficient, accurate and compact than traditional body tracking systems.

The head-mounted internal tracking system consists of an optical mask, an outwardly-facing sensor and an illumination source that captures an image of a user's body part using a lensless camera, then encodes the image using the optical mask, the sensor captures the image and feeds it into a computer program that can identify the body part in the scrambled image.
