CTOnews.com November 4 news, Microsoft recently updated support documents, announced for January 1, 2021 Surface PC products, extended its support cycle to six years.

CTOnews.com reported in September that Microsoft announced a new policy on firmware and driver updates for Surface devices alongside new products such as Surface Laptop Studio 2, Surface Laptop Go 3 and Surface Go 4.

Microsoft said that in order to help IT administrators better manage Surface devices, it extended driver and firmware support for Surface devices to six years after the product was officially launched, up from four years currently.

Previously, the update was limited to new Surface products, but Microsoft expanded the scope this time, and any Surface PC shipped after January 1, 2021 will receive a six-year firmware update.

For devices released before January 1, 2021: Surface devices will receive driver and firmware updates for at least four years from the device's first release. If the support duration exceeds four years, an updated end-of-service date is published prior to the last service date.

For devices released on or after January 1, 2021: Surface devices will receive driver and firmware updates for at least six years from the device's first release. If the support duration exceeds six years, an updated end-of-service date is published prior to the last service date.

This means that Surface Pro 7+, Surface Go 3, Surface Laptop 4, Surface Laptop Go 2, Surface Studio 2+, and Surface Laptop Studio 1 all get an extra two years of support, and the support period is extended to six years.
