UAW has previously tried to organize electric car leaders and others. Mr Finn says these efforts have failed because of union corruption, poor relations with bosses and poor contracts.

Finn sees no reason to meet with Tesla's chief executive. "I don't know what's the use of that," he said. "once we are organized, maybe we will meet at the negotiating table."

Mr Finn expects non-union companies to try to shut out UAW by raising wages, as Toyota announced this week that it plans to raise the maximum wage for most US assembly line workers by 9.2 per cent.

Finn says that's not going to work. "hopefully we can get there, organize them, make them UAW members, so they can make full use of their membership and get better contracts."
