IFLYTEK released version 3.0 of its iFLYTEK Spark model on October 24. According to iFLYTEK, Spark 3.0 has achieved the overall transcendence of ChatGPT, and the field has surpassed the most powerful GPT-4.

The National Research Institute of Economics of the Development Research Center of the State Council compared Spark 3.0 with ChatGPT and GPT-4, and pointed out that the comprehensive ability of Spark 3.0 has reached the international first-class level, surpassing ChatGPT in all 7 evaluation industries and better than GPT-4 in other parts.

Unlike other large model products, iFLYTEK Spark is based entirely on domestic computing platform training, that is, the "Fei Xing No. 1" large model computing platform jointly released by iFLYTEK and Huawei that day, which Liu Qingfeng said can achieve larger parameter large model training for standard GPT-4.

The training of large models requires huge computing resources, and at present, almost all the computing support of large models comes from Nvidia's GPU chip. Over the past year, Nvidia's GPU chip has been hard to find in the market and the price is high. With its monopoly on AI computing, Nvidia's market capitalization has soared to trillions of dollars, the equivalent of eight Intel.

However, under the chip control of the United States, Chinese technology companies have always been faced with the problem of calculating their necks. Previously, the United States has imposed bandwidth rate restrictions on AI chips exported to China, and Nvidia's most advanced A100 and H100 chips are not allowed to be supplied to China. Since then, Nvidia has provided domestic alternative chips A800 and H800 to reduce the transmission rate.

But the situation has changed again. On Oct. 17, the Biden government upgraded export controls on AI chips so that even castrated versions of the A800 and H800 could not be exported to China. Various media reports have pointed out that the new rule will deprive Chinese technology companies of access to key AI resources, and will be a blow to China's big model industry on the eve of the outbreak.

The technological breakthrough of "Flying Star 1" can be said to be another milestone in China's independent innovation, so that computing power will no longer become a gap hindering the development of China's AI. Liu Qingfeng, chairman of iFLYTEK, also pointed out that building a large model computing base with Huawei is not only a mutual alliance of Chinese enterprises, but also provides the world with a second possibility and a second choice.

But choosing independent innovation means long-term and firm technology investment and huge funds. IFLYTEK spent more than 1 billion yuan on R & D in the first three quarters of this year, an increase of about 44% over the same period last year, putting pressure on its performance. In an interview with the media after the press conference, Liu Qingfeng said that if they had chosen the established Nvidia platform in the first place, Spark 3.0 might have been better, but "you have to take this step."

Breaking the technological blockade requires independent innovation, long-term and firm investment, and the joint development of all parties in the industrial ecology. It is understood that in building the computing power of independent innovation, iFLYTEK and Huawei have formed a "joint special task force", which has doubled the efficiency of spark model training and reasoning within six months.
