CTOnews.com Tongchao Liu of Argonne National Laboratory has found a way to extend the life of electric car batteries.

Currently, the main problem affecting battery life is concentrated on the cathode, and during each charging cycle, the internal components of the electrode expand and contract, resulting in wear.

This new technology eliminates the need for cobalt, a mineral with significant environmental and human concerns. In cobalt mines, the soil is contaminated, depriving farmers of their livelihoods, while people suffer lung diseases from dust and pollutants in the air. Cobalt radioactivity is also a concern for many miners.

MIT Science and Technology Review listed the scientist on the 2023 "35 Innovators Under 35" list, saying that the lithium battery developed by Liu Tongchao, 32, could overcome major obstacles in battery life and cost. Although the new batteries are not yet ready for market, several companies have shown interest.
